Your language is waiting for a Wikipedia.

The Incubator app guides people who have never edited a wiki through their first contributions to the wiki of their language on Wikimedia Incubator, where new language editions of Wikipedia and its sister projects grow before they get their own site.

The app's home screen for the Laz Wikipedia: the number of contributors in the last 30 days against the five the policy asks for, a personal monthly goal, and today's tasks.

How it works

  1. Choose your language. Every open wiki on Incubator is listed with its recent activity; the sister project is a choice, not a code to type.
  2. Sign in with a Wikimedia account. The same account works everywhere on Wikimedia; the app never sees your password.
  3. Make a small contribution. Translate the opening sentence of an article, link its words to other pages, add a source. The app writes the page the way the wiki expects; you never see markup.
  4. See what it adds up to. Each edit is shown against what the wiki needs to graduate from Incubator, and you can invite other speakers with one link.

For communities

The app follows each wiki's own conventions: the folders it keeps its pages in, the heading it uses for references, its infobox. Its edits carry the tag of the app's OAuth consumer and credit the source of a translation in the edit summary. What the edits look like and how to adapt the app to your wiki is described on the app's page on Incubator; questions and problems are welcome as tasks on Phabricator.
